Yesterday's results & headlines

Scandinavia gives O'Brien his ton at Ascot

Royal Ascot's Gold Cup Day belonged to Ballydoyle. Scandinavia, ridden by Ryan Moore, dug deepest in a pulsating finish to deny last year's hero Trawlerman by a head over the two-and-a-half miles, with Sweet William staying on for third. The victory delivered Aidan O'Brien his landmark 100th Royal Ascot winner and a record-extending tenth Gold Cup — a remarkable training milestone confirmed in a race time of 4m 18.53s.

Earlier on the card, Moore and Joseph O'Brien combined to take the King George V Stakes, while William Haggas and James Doyle took the Ribblesdale with their well-fancied filly. Seamie Heffernan stole the opener, the Chesham Stakes, for Johnny Murtagh's Tony Mullins-trained stable, completing a deeply Irish day on the Heath.

Bethell strikes late as Black Caps wobble at the Oval

At the Kia Oval, England's second Rothesay Test against New Zealand opened with stand-in skipper Joe Root winning the toss and inserting the tourists. The decision was vindicated late in the day as Jacob Bethell (2-8) and debutant seamer Sonny Baker (2 wkts) ripped through the middle order, leaving New Zealand 291-7 at stumps. Tom Blundell top-scored with 51 from 84 balls; Glenn Phillips will resume unbeaten on 49 this morning. Root is captaining in the absence of Ben Stokes, stood down by the ECB following an off-field nightclub incident.

Transfer window opens with a bang

The Premier League's summer window opened on Monday and the early business has been brisk. Manchester United are closing on Atalanta's Ederson in a deal worth around £34.9m, while Chelsea have agreed the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid. Tottenham have moved swiftly to land Marcos Senesi on a free, and Manchester City have already had two nine-figure bids rejected by Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Today's fixtures & previews

The juvenile fillies open proceedings in the Albany Stakes at , before the headline acts: the Commonwealth Cup at brings the top three-year-old sprinters together over six furlongs, while the Coronation Stakes at pits the season's leading three-year-old fillies over a mile. The Duke of Edinburgh, Sandringham, King Edward VII (G2) and Palace of Holyroodhouse handicaps round off the card at .

World Cup 2026 — Scotland's qualification crunch

Steve Clarke's Scotland kick off at against Morocco at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough. Win and the Tartan Army are into the round of 32 for the first time at a major tournament — a remarkable thought after John McGinn's winner in Houston last weekend. Earlier in the evening the hosts the United States open Group D against Australia (, Seattle), and Brazil — already two wins from two in Group C — face Haiti in Philadelphia at . Türkiye-Paraguay closes the night from Santa Clara.

Cricket and the rest

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Venetian Sun — 9/4 (Bet365), Commonwealth Cup 15:05 Ascot

Selection: Venetian Sun to win. Reasoning: Karl Burke's filly is unbeaten over six furlongs, took the Group 3 Albany Stakes at this meeting last year and returned with an impressive Sandy Lane Stakes success at Haydock. She handles fast ground, draws well in double figures and crucially picks up the fillies' allowance against the colts. The strongest piece of form in the line-up.

2. Zarigana — 7/4 (William Hill), Coronation Stakes 16:20 Ascot

Selection: Zarigana to win. Reasoning: Aga Khan-owned and Francis-Henri Graffard-trained, she heads the market with the strongest Guineas-trial form of any miler still campaigning at three. Bred to relish a stiff mile and proven on a sound surface, she sets the standard in a Group 1 that often goes to a hot favourite.

3. Scotland Draw No Bet vs Morocco — 6/4 (Sky Bet)

Selection: Scotland (Draw No Bet). Reasoning: The 4-4-2 that stifled Haiti looked tournament-ready and Morocco arrive battered: goalkeeper Yassine Bounou is doubtful with an arm injury and ex-Hammer Nayef Aguerd is struggling after a pre-tournament knock. With McKenna back in training and Robertson galvanised, the stake refund on a draw cushions the variance of a tight knockout-style fixture.

4. England to win the second Test — 4/6 (Paddy Power)

Selection: England to win the Test. Reasoning: Root's call to bowl looks inspired with the Black Caps already 291-7 and the Oval pitch offering enough for the seamers. With Bethell finding his rhythm, Baker impressing on debut and a deep batting unit to follow, England should establish a meaningful first-innings lead. Short, but on data the right side.

5. Manchester United to sign a forward before 1 July — 5/6 (BetVictor Specials)

Selection: Yes — United to add a senior forward in June. Reasoning: With Ederson's defensive midfield deal in advanced stages and Mateus Fernandes touted as the next domino, briefings out of Carrington suggest Ratcliffe wants a marquee centre-forward signed before the US tour. Plenty of names — Delap among them — make the bookmaker's market.

Player news & injury updates

Scott McKenna returns to Tartan Army training

The Hearts defender — a calf doubt since the Haiti opener — has rejoined full sessions in Boston, easing Steve Clarke's central-defensive concerns ahead of Morocco. Captain Andrew Robertson is fit and expected to keep the armband at left-back, with Angus Gunn likely to retain the gloves.

Morocco sweat on Bounou and Aguerd

The Atlas Lions face a goalkeeping headache: Yassine Bounou is rated doubtful after taking a heavy fall against Brazil, while Nayef Aguerd has not fully shaken off the muscular issue he picked up in the warm-up draw with Norway. Walid Regragui may be forced into a defensive reshuffle that hands Scotland a clear avenue down the channels.

Ben Stokes stood down by the ECB

England's Test captain was withdrawn from the second-Test squad following an off-field nightclub incident now under internal review. Joe Root has stepped up as stand-in skipper for the remainder of the Oval Test, with the ECB declining to comment on disciplinary timelines.

Premier League comings and goings

Beyond the headline moves, Anthony Gordon has completed a switch from Newcastle to the continent, while Tottenham's pursuit of Marcos Senesi on a free is now expected to be formally announced in the coming hours. Manchester City's pursuit of Elliot Anderson remains alive despite Nottingham Forest's resolute stance on a British-record demand, and Adam Wharton is the next Crystal Palace name agents are circling.

Royal Ascot jockey watch

Ryan Moore continues his pursuit of the meeting's leading rider title with eight from sixteen, leading William Buick by two going into the Coronation Stakes card. Frankie Dettori, riding at the meeting for what could be his final time before his autumn US relocation, books a single Sandringham mount for the Stoute team.
