📌 Editor's Tip of the Day
1. Calico Blue — Queensferry Stakes, Chester 15:20 — 11/4 (general)
Selection: Calico Blue to win. Reasoning: The Varian three-year-old tops a tight nine-runner Listed field and, crucially, has the ammunition to handle Chester's unique tight, turning circuit better than most. Ray Dawson takes the ride, and while 11/4 is no gift in a Listed sprint, the yard's summer strike-rate and this colt's progressive profile make him the soundest anchor on the card.

Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Sunday, 2 August 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

Goodwood goes out with a bang

The Qatar Goodwood Festival reached its climax on Saturday, and the meeting's showpiece sprint served up a familiar tale of chaos. The Coral Stewards' Cup — 27 runners charging six furlongs across the Sussex Downs — fell to Evening Saigon at 16/1, ridden by James Doyle for trainer Hamad Al Jehani. It was another reminder that the most competitive handicap sprint of the summer rarely rewards the short-priced.

There was Group-race quality earlier on the card, too. Goodie Two Shoes (8/1) landed the Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) for the in-form Irish yard of Joseph O'Brien under Dylan Browne McMonagle, while Enfjaar (8/1), trained by Roger Varian, took the Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes. Ryan Moore was on the mark aboard Hopewell Rock (5/1) for George Boughey in the Summer Handicap.

Pre-season football hots up

On the football front the summer tour circuit delivered its usual mix of experiment and intrigue. Manchester United faced Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on Saturday as Ruben Amorim's side continued their build-up, while the weekend's programme across Europe and the United States saw Premier League squads sharpening up with just under three weeks until the 2026/27 campaign kicks off on 21 August. With the World Cup only recently concluded, managers are juggling returning internationals and heavy minutes for fringe players as the transfer window ticks towards its 1 September deadline.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football — Premier League Summer Series

The headline fixture is transatlantic. Leeds United take on Liverpool at Soldier Field, Chicago, in the Premier League Summer Series, kicking off at . Arne Slot's champions have looked slick in warm-up outings and will fancy stretching a newly promoted Leeds side that has mixed its results so far in the States. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last eight competitive meetings with Leeds, and this is a useful barometer before Anfield friendlies against Monaco and Como later in the month.

Horse racing — Chester & a busy Sunday

Chester stages the domestic feature, a six-race card running from to on good ground. The centrepiece is the Queensferry Stakes, a Listed Class 1 contest for three-year-olds over six furlongs, with nine set to line up. Calico Blue heads the market at 11/4 for Roger Varian and Ray Dawson, with Declan Carroll's Lifeplan next in at 3/1.

There is jump and Flat action across the Irish Sea as the Galway Festival signs off on Family Day. The Sunday card runs eight races, headlined by the Irish Stallion Farms EBF "Ahonoora" Handicap (Premier Handicap, 7f) at . Yarmouth completes the UK's Sunday racing menu.

The week ahead

Looking further forward, the domestic season formally opens with the FA Community Shield on Sunday 16 August, where Premier League champions Arsenal meet FA Cup winners Manchester City — this year at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff (3pm BST), Wembley being unavailable due to concerts. The bookmakers can barely split the pair.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

2. Jazl — Queensferry Stakes, Chester 15:20 — 4/1 each-way (general)

Selection: Jazl each-way. Reasoning: If you want an alternative to the market principals in the same race, the Simon & Ed Crisford runner rates the value play under Jack Mitchell. At 4/1 with place terms in a nine-runner Listed heat, there is enough insurance to justify the each-way route against a slightly exposed favourite.

3. Liverpool to win — Leeds v Liverpool, Chicago — around 4/6 (Bet365)

Selection: Liverpool to win the 90 minutes. Reasoning: Pre-season prices are always a caveat, but Slot's side carry vastly superior squad depth and have carried their form into this tour. Liverpool's dominant recent record against Leeds and the gulf in personnel make a Reds win the most likely outcome; those wanting more juice can pair it with both teams to score, given how open friendlies tend to be.

4. Arsenal to win the Community Shield — 2.40 / 7/5 (BetMGM)

Selection: Arsenal to lift the Shield on 16 August. Reasoning: An ante-post play for those thinking ahead. The Premier League champions are rated marginally the more likely winners in Cardiff, and with Mikel Arteta's squad settled and City in transition, 2.40 on the title holders looks a fair outright at this early stage. Keep the stake modest given team news is a fortnight away.

5. Song Of The Clyde — Queensferry Stakes, Chester 15:20 — 7/1 each-way (general)

Selection: Song Of The Clyde each-way. Reasoning: A speculative saver for the bigger-price hunters. Clive Cox's sprinter, partnered by Kieran Shoemark, has the raw pace to trouble the front two if the draw and pace set up, and 7/1 with a place secured is generous enough to warrant a small interest in a competitive Listed sprint.

Player news & injury updates

Transfer window enters the run-in

The summer window opened on 15 June and closes at 23:00 BST on Tuesday 1 September, leaving clubs a month to complete their business. This has been an unusually compressed trading period, with a summer World Cup keeping many targets away on international duty and squeezing negotiations into the back end of the window. Expect activity to accelerate sharply once pre-season tours wrap up.

Liverpool's American audition

Tonight's trip to Chicago doubles as a fitness test as much as a friendly. With competitive action still three weeks off, Slot is expected to rotate heavily across the 90 minutes, handing minutes to squad players and academy graduates while managing the load of his returning World Cup contingent. Watch for who is trusted in the starting XI as a pointer to the opening-day line-up.

Community Shield squad picture

Both Arsenal and Manchester City will firm up their availability over the next fortnight ahead of the 16 August curtain-raiser in Cardiff. Late-returning internationals and any knocks picked up on tour will shape both managers' selections, and team news nearer the day will be pivotal for the outright markets.

Cricket — eyes on the Pakistan tour

Away from football and racing, England's Test attention turns to the visit of Pakistan, with the tourists due in England for a red-ball series through August and September. Squad fitness and rotation ahead of a demanding home summer remain the talking points for the selectors as the series approaches.
