Yesterday's results & headlines

Leeds expose Liverpool's defensive problems

Leeds United beat Liverpool 4-2 in the most eye-catching Premier League pre-season result reported on Monday. Leeds produced 15 attempts, seven on target, against Liverpool's nine efforts and three on target. The result supplied encouragement for Daniel Farke's preparations but raised an obvious question for new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola: whether his squad has enough established central-defensive cover. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai had recently been used at centre-back while Liverpool awaited the integration of £60 million arrival Jeremy Jacquet.

Other leading-flight warm-up results included Sunderland 1-0 Wrexham, Arsenal 4-1 Girona, Brighton 4-3 Strasbourg and Manchester City 1-1 Inter Milan. Manchester United defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm, Tottenham beat Chelsea 2-1 and Aston Villa opened their Asian visit with a 3-1 success against an Indonesia All-Stars side. Although none carried competitive points, the volume of goals offered useful evidence about sharpness and defensive organisation before the Premier League begins on 21 August.

Welsh Fire sweep Southern Brave

Welsh Fire completed a men's and women's Hundred double over Southern Brave at Sophia Gardens. In the men's contest, Brave were restricted to 115 for eight before Fire reached 116 for four with eight balls unused, winning by six wickets. The women's match was much tighter: Southern Brave made 121 for five and Welsh Fire replied with 122 for six, getting home from the final ball by four wickets. Those results strengthened Fire's position during the decisive closing phase of the group programme.

Racing turns towards Tuesday's three British cards

Monday was comparatively quiet on the British racing front, leaving attention firmly on today's Flat programme. The declarations present contrasting tests: Catterick's sharp, undulating circuit, a good-ground afternoon at Ffos Las and an evening card at Lingfield incorporating turf and all-weather races. With no major Pattern contest on the schedule, draw, pace, fitness and recent handicap form should carry greater weight than reputation.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football

Aston Villa face BG Pathum United at True BG Stadium in Thailand at , the local kick-off being 19:30. Unai Emery's side won 3-1 in Jakarta on Saturday and this is the second stop of a three-match Asian itinerary, with Bayern Munich to follow in Hong Kong on Friday. Villa are likely to continue sharing minutes across the squad in demanding heat, so the second-half combinations may be more instructive than the starting XI.

Ipswich Town host Le Havre at Portman Road at . Ipswich have already recorded 2-0 and 2-1 wins over Oxford United and Wycombe respectively and now meet Ligue 1 opposition in the first of two home friendlies. Premier League newcomers Bournemouth also play Genoa at their training ground, but that match is behind closed doors and no public kick-off time has been confirmed.

Horse racing

Three British meetings are scheduled. Catterick stages six Flat races from to . Ffos Las begins at , with seven declared races through ; the published going is good. The card includes a seven-runner two-year-old novice at 15:00 and two divisions of a 7½-furlong handicap. Lingfield supplies the evening action from until .

The Hundred

SunRisers Leeds meet London Spirit at Headingley in both competitions today. The women's match starts at , followed by the men's fixture at . Conditions and the used surface will merit reassessment between matches: batting became progressively less straightforward during several recent Hundred double-headers, making the toss particularly significant for the evening game.

European football

Champions League qualifying also resumes. British clubs are not involved tonight, but notable ties include Sparta Prague against Lyon and Union Saint-Gilloise against Bodo/Glimt, both beginning at . Olympiacos host NEC at the same time, while Hapoel Beer Sheva face Red Star Belgrade at .

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Safari Dream to win the 14:30 Ffos Las — 11/4 (William Hill)

Selection: Safari Dream to win. Reasoning: Rod Millman's six-year-old brings a solid recent sequence of 3-4-1-7-5-3, has a previous distance success and owns the highest Racing Post Rating in the field at 77. Stall one should permit Oisin Murphy to conserve ground, while the combination of an experienced sprinter and a seven-runner field makes the 11/4 price preferable to shorter alternatives elsewhere on the card.

2. Avionics to win the 15:00 Ffos Las — 2/1 (Paddy Power)

Selection: Avionics to win. Reasoning: The Andrew Balding-trained colt has finished fourth and second in his two starts and already possesses an official rating of 83 and an RPR of 84. That is stronger established form than most of the opposition. Perfect Nation must concede 7lb for his previous win, whereas Avionics receives that weight and retains clear scope to improve for a stable adept with juveniles.

3. Aston Villa to win against BG Pathum United — 4/11 (bet365)

Selection: Aston Villa to win in 90 minutes. Reasoning: Villa warmed up with a 3-1 victory over Indonesia All-Stars and possess substantially greater squad depth than their Thai opponents. Rotation and the climate make a large handicap unattractive, but Emery can introduce senior quality throughout the contest. The straightforward match-result market limits the risk created by wholesale substitutions.

4. Ipswich Town to beat Le Havre — 10/11 (Sky Bet)

Selection: Ipswich Town to win in 90 minutes. Reasoning: Ipswich arrive after victories over Oxford and Wycombe and have home advantage at Portman Road. Le Havre represent a tougher technical test, but Ipswich's greater continuity, positive recent results and incentive to perform before their supporters make close to even money appealing in a friendly where both sides should still use sizeable squads.

5. Welsh Fire women to win The Hundred outright — 7/2 (Betfair Sportsbook)

Selection: Welsh Fire women to win the tournament. Reasoning: Monday's last-ball victory over Southern Brave demonstrated both composure and lower-order depth. Fire have now shown that they can defend, chase and survive a tight finish. An outright position avoids forcing a wager on today's Headingley surface before its pace and carry are known, while their improving momentum justifies inclusion on the shortlist.

Player news & injury updates

Liverpool wait to integrate Jacquet

Liverpool's defensive depth remains under scrutiny following the 4-2 loss to Leeds. Jeremy Jacquet, signed from Rennes for a reported £60 million, could soon make his first appearance after joining the tour later than several team-mates. Szoboszlai's recent deployment at centre-back illustrated why a natural defender is needed, while Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Ryan Gravenberch have also been working back towards match involvement after joining pre-season late.

Leeds introduce summer reinforcements

Harry Wilson has made his first appearance in Leeds colours after his summer move and is pushing for a larger role in the remaining warm-ups. Defender Tarik Muharemovic is another new arrival being integrated into Farke's plans. The four-goal display against Liverpool increases competition for attacking places before Saturday's home friendly with RB Leipzig.

Arsenal's established trio return

Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz are progressing through pre-season after injury interruptions affected Arsenal's previous campaign. Their availability is potentially as important as further transfer business for Mikel Arteta. The 4-1 win over Girona was another positive conditioning exercise, although minutes will continue to be controlled before the Community Shield against Manchester City on 16 August.

Ugarte injury informs United's midfield plans

Manuel Ugarte is carrying an injury during Manchester United's preparations, increasing the importance of midfield cover and contributing to continued transfer speculation around that department. United nevertheless beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Stockholm. Casemiro's role and workload will be watched closely while Ugarte works towards full fitness.

Transfer market: Newcastle and Tottenham

Newcastle have reportedly moved to activate goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek's €30 million release clause as they reshape their squad. Tottenham, meanwhile, continue to face speculation surrounding Cristian Romero, with reports claiming an agreement has been reached for his departure. Neither proposed transaction should be treated as complete until the clubs publish confirmation, but both situations could materially affect defensive line-ups before the league season.
