Yesterday's results & headlines
Carabao Cup second-round action dominated Thursday night. Chelsea saw off Luton Town 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, Danny Welbeck heading in from Malo Gusto's cross before a late Hakeem Odoffin own goal wrapped things up, while Fulham brushed aside AFC Wimbledon 3-0, Emile Smith Rowe opening the scoring before Rodrigo Muniz headed in his first goal in over a year. It was a mixed night for the competition's bigger names elsewhere: Newcastle United needed a scrappy 3-2 win over West Brom to progress, Tottenham Hotspur thumped Charlton Athletic 5-1, and Nottingham Forest were the highest-profile casualties, beaten by fellow top-flight side Leeds United.
Off the pitch, the summer transfer window's final week is generating plenty of noise ahead of Tuesday's 11pm deadline. Newcastle are still pushing to land Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, while Aston Villa have made an enquiry for West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo after losing Ezri Konsa to Arsenal. Selection: Liverpool to win at Anfield, Saturday 12:30 kick-off. Reasoning: Both sides are still seeking their first league win of the season after opening-day defeats, but Forest travel to Anfield off the back of a Carabao Cup exit to fellow top-flight opposition and look short of confidence. The price is skinny, but Liverpool's home record against newly-promoted-mentality opposition makes this a solid banker leg for an accumulator.
