Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Saturday, 29 August 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

Manchester City underlined their title credentials with a ruthless 4-1 win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scoring twice at Selhurst Park to make it back-to-back wins to open Enzo Maresca's reign as head coach. Haaland nodded home a looping header after 17 minutes before Cherki struck twice in five second-half minutes either side of an unfortunate own goal from City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who turned Yeremy Pino's fierce free-kick into his own net for Palace's only reply. Haaland completed the rout five minutes from time. Crystal Palace, now managed by Pierre Sage, remain without a point after two matches and face a nervy start to the new campaign.

On the cricket field, England tightened their grip on the second Test against Pakistan at Lord's. Ollie Robinson (4-11) and Jofra Archer (3-26) shared seven wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for just 110 in reply to England's 290, leaving the tourists 261 runs behind before England pushed the lead further to 81 for 3 by the close. Pakistan's day worsened when opener Imam-ul-Haq was unable to bat after straining a calf muscle while fielding.

Off the pitch, the summer transfer window enters its final straight before Tuesday's 11pm deadline. Newcastle United have already banked significant fees this summer, with Anthony Gordon completing a £69.3m move to Barcelona and Bruno Guimarães heading to Arsenal, while Sandro Tonali swapped Tyneside for Tottenham Hotspur. Expect a frantic final 48 hours as clubs look to complete late business before the window shuts.

There was also a fresh defensive blow for Crystal Palace, who confirmed that centre-back Chadi Riad has ruptured his ACL and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines — a major setback for Pierre Sage as he tries to arrest a difficult start to the season.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football

Saturday's Premier League programme is headlined by Liverpool hosting Nottingham Forest at Anfield, kicking off at , before Bournemouth entertain Everton and Coventry City host Hull City, both kicking off at . The day's late kick-off sees Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle United at , live on Sky Sports, with both sides desperate to open their points account after contrasting opening-day results — Spurs were beaten 3-0 at Brentford while Newcastle shared four goals in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool. Elsewhere, the Championship serves up a bumper card including Watford v West Ham United and Southampton v Millwall, both at 15:00, while Celtic host Falkirk in the Scottish Premiership.

Horse racing

It's a packed Saturday on the Flat and over jumps, with six British meetings in action. Goodwood stages the highlight of the day, the Group 2 Virgin Bet Celebration Mile at , worth £200,000 and run over a mile on good-to-firm going. Sandown Park hosts two black-type contests of its own — the Group 3 BetMGM Atalanta Stakes for fillies and mares and the Group 3 Solario Stakes for juveniles — as part of a seven-race card running from 13:40 to 17:10. Jump racing fans are catered for at Cartmel, while Beverley, Windsor and Chepstow complete the day's action, the latter two staging cards under lights into the evening.

Cricket & tennis

Day three of the second Test between England and Pakistan resumes at Lord's, with the hosts already 261 runs ahead and looking to press home their advantage before setting Pakistan a target. Over in New York, the US Open continues into its opening week without either Emma Raducanu or Jack Draper, both ruled out through injury before a ball was struck in anger.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Liverpool to beat Nottingham Forest — 1/2 (bet365)

Selection: Liverpool to win (12:30, Anfield). Reasoning: Forest have yet to get off the mark in front of goal this season and travel to an Anfield side with far greater attacking quality. It's a short price, but home advantage and squad depth should tell against a Forest team still finding its feet in the top flight.

2. Newcastle United to win at Tottenham — 19/10 (bet365)

Selection: Newcastle United (match odds), 17:30 kick-off. Reasoning: Eddie Howe's side traded blows with Liverpool in a 2-2 opening draw and look the value price against a Tottenham defence that shipped three without reply at Brentford. Newcastle have also won seven of the last 15 meetings between these two, more than Spurs' three.

3. Seagulls Eleven each-way — 10/3 (bet365)

Selection: Seagulls Eleven each-way in the Group 2 Virgin Bet Celebration Mile (15:10, Goodwood). Reasoning: Has shown plenty of ability over course and distance at Goodwood previously and steps back up in a wide-open renewal that also features Boiling Point and Diego Ventura; each-way cover looks the sensible approach in a competitive field.

4. My Love Is King — 6/1 (bet365)

Selection: My Love Is King to win the 14:15 handicap at Sandown. Reasoning: The John and Thady Gosden-trained gelding was only beaten a neck by Maltese Cross at Newbury on his most recent start and looks well treated making his handicap debut for a yard in good form.

5. Rock Montreal — 5/2 (bet365)

Selection: Rock Montreal to win the Group 3 Solario Stakes (Sandown). Reasoning: An impressive winner at York in mid-August, beating Mina by two lengths, and steps up to Group company with plenty of scope for further improvement as a two-year-old.

Player news & injury updates

Crystal Palace defensive crisis

Pierre Sage's problems at the back deepened this week as Chadi Riad was confirmed to have ruptured his ACL, ruling him out for the majority of the season, while winger Ismaïla Sarr remains sidelined with a groin injury that is taking longer to heal than first hoped.

Manchester City fitness update

Enzo Maresca's title challengers still have injury concerns despite Friday's rout, with Jeremy Doku continuing to be sidelined and Matheus Nunes being carefully managed as he works his way back to full match sharpness.

Newcastle knock for Osula

Will Osula is likely to be sidelined for a couple of weeks, with Newcastle awaiting further specialist assessment before confirming a firm return date — a blow for Eddie Howe's attacking options ahead of the trip to Tottenham.

Transfer window countdown

With the summer window closing at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September, expect a frenetic final 48 hours of business. Newcastle have already recouped big money this summer from the sales of Anthony Gordon (Barcelona, £69.3m) and Bruno Guimarães (Arsenal), while Sandro Tonali has swapped Tyneside for Tottenham Hotspur — deals that continue to shape the balance of power at the top of the division as clubs scramble to finalise their squads before deadline day.
