📌 Editor's Tip of the Day
1. Arsenal to win — 8/15 (bet365)
Selection: Arsenal to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park, 20:00 kick-off. Reasoning: Arsenal opened the season with a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry and have won their opening away league game without conceding in each of the last four seasons. Villa, by contrast, were thrashed 4-0 by Brighton on the opening weekend and have had a turbulent summer with Ollie Watkins's exit to Saudi Arabia. Short, but backable at odds-on with the exchange offering a similar price.

Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Monday, 31 August 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

It was a bumper opening weekend of Premier League action. Chelsea edged a seven-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge, beating Brighton 4-3 as a Cole Palmer stunner sealed victory and continued Xabi Alonso's winning start as head coach. Across London, Manchester United finally got off the mark with a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, Bruno Fernandes helping himself to a hat-trick either side of a Harry Maguire header, though Ipswich briefly led through Leif Davis. It was United's first Premier League win of the new season.

Elsewhere, Liverpool were held 2-2 by Nottingham Forest at Anfield, with Alexander Isak's leveller cancelled out by a Morgan Gibbs-White penalty before Daniel Munoz snatched a point late on — Andoni Iraola is still waiting for his first win in charge of the Reds. Tottenham lost again, beaten 2-0 by Newcastle through second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa. Bournemouth 1-1 Everton saw James Tarkowski snatch a stoppage-time leveller on Marco Rose's away debut as Toffees boss, while Leeds United and Brentford drew 1-1, and Sunderland beat Fulham 1-0 courtesy of Wilson Isidor. Newly-promoted Hull City made it back-to-back wins, edging Coventry City 1-0 through substitute Liam Millar. On Friday night, Manchester City thrashed Crystal Palace 4-1 at Selhurst Park, Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both scoring twice.

In racing, Saturday's feature at Windsor saw the Listed Weatherbys August Stakes go to Tenability (2/1) under Tom Marquand for trainer William Haggas, while cards also took place at Sandown, Goodwood and the Curragh as the Flat season builds towards its autumn showpieces.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football

The Premier League's opening round concludes with a big one: Aston Villa host Arsenal at Villa Park in the Monday Night Football slot, kick-off on Sky Sports. Arsenal come into it unbeaten after a 3-0 win over Coventry, while Villa are still smarting from a 4-0 opening-day defeat to Brighton and a disrupted summer in the transfer market. It's also deadline day for the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 (both shutting at 19:00 UK time), with the Premier League and EFL windows running through to 23:00 on Tuesday 1 September, so expect late-night confirmations from English clubs.

Horse racing

A solid Flat and jumps card in Britain today. Ripon stages eight races from to on good, good-to-soft in places, headlined by a Listed two-year-old contest at . Chepstow runs a mixed card through the afternoon and evening, with a two-year-old fillies' event at and a competitive handicap at . National Hunt fans are catered for at Cartmel, where a handicap chase at is the pick of the card, while the Flat rounds off the day with an evening all-weather meeting at Southwell from . Epsom also stages a card, completing a busy bank holiday-adjacent Monday for British racing.

Tennis

Day two of the US Open in New York gets under way from mid-afternoon UK time, with British interest including Katie Boulter in the women's singles and Cameron Norrie, Arthur Fery and Jan Choinski in the men's draw; Henry Patten and Lloyd Glasspool have also qualified for the mixed doubles.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

2. Both Teams to Score — No, 17/20 (William Hill)

Selection: Aston Villa v Arsenal to finish with at least one side kept off the scoresheet. Reasoning: Villa's defence looked porous in their opening loss to Brighton, but Arsenal's meanness on the road (clean sheets in four straight season-openers away from home) points to a low-scoring, one-sided contest rather than end-to-end goals at both ends.

3. Clash Of Hearts each-way — 9/1, 15:05 Ripon (Betfair)

Selection: Clash Of Hearts each-way in the Listed two-year-old contest at Ripon. Reasoning: Adrian Keatley's filly ran a solid fifth in the Group 3 Acomb Stakes at York last month and drops back into more winnable Listed company here; each-way cover looks sensible in a competitive field.

4. Tommie Beau each-way — 11/1, 16:19 Cartmel (Betfair)

Selection: Tommie Beau each-way in the handicap chase at Cartmel. Reasoning: A course specialist with a strong record at this tight, undulating track, tipped as the day's headline selection by Betfair's Katie Midwinter; each-way terms offer insurance in a competitive jumps handicap.

5. Vape each-way — 22/1, 16:00 Chepstow (Betfair)

Selection: Vape each-way in the 16:00 handicap at Chepstow. Reasoning: A bigger-priced each-way punt flagged among today's selections; with each-way places typically paying a fraction of the odds down to fourth or fifth in a big handicap field, there's appeal in taking a run at a double-figure price rather than settling for a short-priced favourite.

Player news & injury updates

Ollie Watkins completes Al-Hilal move

Aston Villa's record Premier League goalscorer Ollie Watkins has completed a reported £50m move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, signing a three-year contract and ending a six-year stay at Villa Park in which he scored 108 goals in 278 appearances. Villa are moving quickly to replace him, closing in on Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson in a deal reported to be worth close to €76m ahead of tonight's deadline.

Chelsea's winning momentum

Xabi Alonso's start at Stamford Bridge continues to impress after the 4-3 win over Brighton, with Palmer's decisive late strike underlining Chelsea's attacking threat heading into a busy September schedule.

Manchester United relief

Bruno Fernandes's hat-trick against Ipswich will ease early-season pressure at Old Trafford after United opened with a loss; Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo were also on the scoresheet in the 5-2 win.

Tottenham's rocky start

Spurs' 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle leaves them with successive losses to open the campaign, intensifying scrutiny on the squad ahead of the transfer deadline as fans push for late reinforcements.
