Liverpool opened their Champions League campaign with a fightback, coming from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Arsenal made harder work of the group than the scoreline suggests but got the job done in Naples, Martin Ødegaard's strike enough to see off Napoli 1-0 on matchday one of the new league-phase format. Elsewhere in Europe, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain both won comfortably as the opening round of fixtures rolled out across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Domestically, the Carabao Cup third round produced the tie of the round as Chelsea came from 2-0 down to beat Leeds United 6-3 at Stamford Bridge. Tarik Muharemović and Brenden Aaronson had the visitors in dreamland early on, but a half-time reshuffle that introduced Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James turned the tie on its head — Palmer struck twice, Neto put Chelsea ahead and Danny Welbeck added a fourth before the rout was completed, sending the holders into the last 16.
Racing eyes were already turning to South Yorkshire, with Doncaster's clerk of the course confirming good ground ahead of the St Leger Festival, which gets under way today. It caps a week in which the build-up has been dominated by talk of Charlie Appleby's juvenile filly Musical Times, unbeaten in two starts and installed as a well-fancied favourite for this afternoon's Group 2 feature.

There's no Premier League action today with matchday one of the Champions League league phase running through to Thursday. New York is building towards a rare all-American men's semi-final at the US Open, with Ben Shelton — fresh from a five-set upset of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz — facing Frances Tiafoe on Friday.
