Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Thursday, 17 September 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

Wednesday's Carabao Cup third round delivered one of the shocks of the season as Manchester United threw away a two-goal lead to lose 2-3 to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. Harry Lacey and Mason Mount had United cruising inside ten minutes, but Georgios Kostoulas pulled one back just before half-time before Pascal Groß and Maxim De Cuyper completed the turnaround. It was the first time in the Premier League era that United have lost a home match in which they led by two goals, and loud boos rang around Old Trafford as pressure mounted on manager Michael Carrick.

Elsewhere in the competition, Everton squeezed past a much-changed Wolverhampton Wanderers side 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-heavy late winner from substitute Charly Alcaraz in the 80th minute, sending the Toffees into round four. The draw for that next round, held after the United tie, paired 16 survivors including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle, Sunderland, Brentford, Fulham and Crystal Palace, with the winners of Everton-or-Wolves, Fleetwood-or-Sheffield United, United-or-Brighton and Manchester City-or-Norwich still to be confirmed once tonight's remaining tie is played.

Racing round-up

At Yarmouth, the Listed John Musker Fillies' Stakes threw up a surprise as Naga scored at 20/1, denying the well-backed favourite Fairy Glen (13/8), who was beaten three-quarters of a length having dropped in grade after a fifth-place finish in a French Group 1 contest.

Cricket context

England's white-ball side head into today's action full of confidence after a thumping 119-run win over Sri Lanka in the series opener at Southampton, where Harry Brook's unbeaten 114 from 49 balls and Jos Buttler's 80 from 44 set up one of England's biggest T20I totals before the tourists were bowled out for 135.

Today's fixtures & previews

Europa League — matchday one

Three English and Scottish clubs open their European campaigns tonight. Celtic host Ferencváros at Parkhead with kick-off at , live on TNT Sports 3, looking to bounce back from Sunday's 3-0 League Cup quarter-final defeat to Rangers. Crystal Palace begin life as Conference League holders stepping up a level, welcoming Polish champions Lech Poznań to Selhurst Park, while Real Sociedad host Bournemouth at the Reale Arena with kick-off at BST, the Cherries still chasing a first Premier League win of the season but unbeaten in four across all competitions.

Carabao Cup — third round finale

Manchester City complete the third round when they host Norwich City at the Etihad Stadium, kick-off , with Pep Guardiola expected to field a much-changed side against Championship opposition.

Cricket

England go for a series-clinching win over Sri Lanka in the second Vitality IT20 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, starting at , with Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson both in contention to come into the XI.

Racing

It's a five-meeting card headlined by the opening day of Ayr's Western Meeting, alongside flat action at Yarmouth and Pontefract, jumps and flat racing at Naas in Ireland, and an evening all-weather card at Southwell. Rain overnight leaves Ayr sitting on soft to good-to-soft going.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Both Teams to Score — Yes at 7/8 (1.88) (Crystal Palace v Lech Poznań)

Selection: BTTS Yes in tonight's Europa League opener at Selhurst Park. Reasoning: Palace are heavy favourites at home, but Lech Poznań arrive in red-hot attacking form having scored 15 goals across their four qualifying ties, while Palace have won just once at home in their last several league outings — enough of an opening for the Poles to find the net.

2. Draw at 13/5 (3.60) (Real Sociedad v Bournemouth)

Selection: Draw in the Anoeta Stadium clash. Reasoning: Sociedad are still reeling from a 3-0 home league defeat to Atlético Madrid, while Bournemouth have drawn their last two and are yet to win in the Premier League this season — a cagey opening continental fixture for both sides points to a share of the spoils.

3. Manchester City -2 Asian Handicap at 3/5 (William Hill) (Man City v Norwich)

Selection: City to win by three or more goals against Championship opposition. Reasoning: Guardiola's side should have more than enough in reserve to see off a Norwich team who conceded four times in their last away outing, even with squad rotation expected at the Etihad.

4. Galyx to win at 5/2 (bet365) (Ayr, 3:00pm)

Selection: Galyx, Charlie McCann's Nap of the Day, in the Killkerran Cup. Reasoning: Jack Channon's gelding made all when winning last time at Beverley off a 5lb lower mark, and the step back up to a competitive Class 2 test at Ayr looks well within reach on similar ground.

5. Traveling Man to win at 11/8 (bet365) (Pontefract, 3:08pm)

Selection: Traveling Man for Charlie Fellowes in the 14-furlong handicap. Reasoning: A fluent winner at Newmarket last time out, he can defy a 5lb rise in the weights with apprentice Mason Paetel claiming 3lb, though backers should note the market wants a sound surface rather than the softer ground forecast further north.

Player news & injury updates

Carrick under fire at Old Trafford

Michael Carrick's position has come under fresh scrutiny after Wednesday's Carabao Cup collapse against Brighton followed Sunday's 1-0 derby defeat to Manchester City. His odds to be the next Premier League manager sacked have been cut from 17/2 into 11/2, though the club and Fabrizio Romano both maintain his job is safe for now with United sitting 13th after four league games.

Chelsea and Liverpool injury news

Chelsea remain without Moisés Caicedo, Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha, with all three being targeted for a return against Brentford next week. Liverpool have a doubt over Cody Gakpo, who was a late call in their recent fixture against Fulham.

Celtic and Ferencváros team news

Camilo Duran is expected to start for Celtic having recovered from a visa-related trip to London, with goalkeeper Vil Sinisalo also set to return ahead of Sam Johnstone. Ferencváros have doubts over Isaac Pappoe and Bence Ötvös, while Daniel Arzani is also managing a knock.

Transfer talk

Manchester United are keeping tabs on Real Madrid's Endrick and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of the January window, while Arsenal continue to monitor Rio Ngumoha's contract situation at Liverpool. Barcelona have added Harry Kane and Erling Haaland to their striker shortlist for next summer, and United are said to fear academy prospect JJ Gabriel could join Manchester City after requesting to leave Carrington.
