Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Friday, 18 September 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

English clubs enjoyed a mixed night in Europe on Thursday. Bournemouth came from behind to win 2-1 away at Real Sociedad in the Europa League, a result that will delight Andoni Iraola's side as they build early momentum in the competition. It was a tougher evening for Celtic, who slipped to a 1-3 defeat away to Ferencváros, leaving Brendan Rodgers with plenty to address before the weekend's domestic action.

In the Premier League table, Brentford head into their Friday night derby unbeaten in ten games in all competitions (five wins, five draws) and sit seventh, just a point behind sixth-placed Chelsea, whose matches this season have produced a division-high 19 goals.

Racing round-up

On the track, Thursday's card at Ayr threw up a shock in the 2pm when 22/1 outsider Opal Storm, ridden by P J McDonald for trainer B Rothwell, held off Thunderstorm Katie by half a length. Later at the same meeting, Pearl Eye (Rhys Elliott) landed the 5.01pm for trainer J S Goldie. Over at Pontefract, odds-on shot Sea Lantern obliged at 13/8 under Rowan Scott for Bryan Ellison in the 3.08pm, while Digger One (Josephine Gordon) followed up at 5/2 later on the card.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football

The Premier League's Friday night slot brings a London-meets-west-London derby feel as Brentford host Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium, kick-off , live on Sky Sports. Brentford have never actually beaten Chelsea in the league but are unbeaten in their last four home meetings with the Blues, who arrive under Xabi Alonso having scored freely but also shipped goals at the back. In the Championship, Bristol City host Watford at Ashton Gate, also kicking off at and shown on Sky Sports Football; the Robins' attacking form contrasts with a Watford side yet to win away this season.

Horse racing

Newbury stages its Dubai Duty Free International fixture, an eight-race card running from through to , headlined by the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes at and the Dubai Duty Free Fillies' Handicap at . Further north, it's Ladies Day at the Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Festival, with the Listed British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes off at and the competitive Ladbrokes Ayr Bronze Cup handicap at . Jumps fans are catered for at Newton Abbot, where a seven-race card runs from to .

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Chelsea to win — 5/4 (Sky Bet)

Selection: Chelsea to beat Brentford. Reasoning: Chelsea have never lost a Premier League away game to Brentford and arrive with the division's most potent attack this season (19 goals in six games). Brentford's unbeaten run has been built heavily on draws, and Chelsea's superior squad depth under Xabi Alonso should tell across 90 minutes.

2. Both Teams To Score & Over 2.5 Goals — 8/11 (William Hill)

Selection: BTTS & Over 2.5 in Brentford v Chelsea. Reasoning: Chelsea's high goals-for tally has come alongside a leaky defence, while Brentford rarely go behind without finding a response at home. Both sides have contributed to open, high-scoring games this term, supporting the goals angle over the result itself.

3. Catullus to win — 3/1 (Bet365)

Selection: Catullus in the 16:07 Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes (Listed) at Newbury. Reasoning: Racing Post's card napper makes Catullus their pick for this Listed sprint, judging the colt to have more to offer over this trip having previously been turned over only by course specialists such as Northern Champion. Second-favourite in the market ahead of a race that looks there for the taking.

4. U Sure Do each-way — 12/1 (Betfair)

Selection: U Sure Do (each-way, 1/5 odds, places 1-6) in the 15:40 Ladbrokes Ayr Bronze Cup. Reasoning: Trained by Tim Easterby, U Sure Do has form on soft ground and was picked out by Betfair's tipsters as a value runner in a typically competitive Bronze Cup handicap field on Ladies Day.

5. Bristol City to win — 19/20 (Sky Bet)

Selection: Bristol City to beat Watford at Ashton Gate. Reasoning: The Robins have carried a genuine attacking threat, registering 39 shots across their last two league outings, and face a Watford side without an away win all season. Home advantage and current form make the hosts solid favourites.

Player news & injury updates

Arsenal missing key defenders

Mikel Arteta remains without William Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera, with Ben White a doubt heading into the weekend. On the transfer front, Arsenal are said to be keeping tabs on Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha, though he currently looks settled at Anfield.

Liverpool's long wait for Bradley

Conor Bradley continues his recovery from the significant knee injury suffered in January and is not expected back before the upcoming international break at the earliest, leaving Arne Slot short of full-back cover for the coming weeks.

Chelsea duo now at Villa Park, Mudryk saga rumbles on

Chelsea's summer business saw both Nicolas Jackson (£47.5m permanent deal) and Alejandro Garnacho (season-long loan) depart Stamford Bridge for Aston Villa. Meanwhile winger Mykhailo Mudryk remains sidelined under an FA suspension stemming from an anti-doping case that is still to be resolved.

Hull City injury list grows

Newly promoted Hull City have been hit by a trio of fitness concerns: Nobel Mendy will sit out after entering the seven-day concussion protocol, Matty Targett is a doubt having twisted an ankle in training, and Charlie Hughes faces around six weeks out with a pubic bone issue, manager Sergej Jakirovic confirmed.
